Varietal identification and genetic pasportization of autochthon, ancient, long-neglected, endangered cultivated grape vine in Armenia.

The main purpose of our present proposal is to preserve genetic resources and ensure long-term sustainability of ancient and endangered grapevine cultivars in Armenia, using genotype detection, identification and characterization of the existing autochthons to ensure their perseverance for future research and applications. The combination of photos (leaves, shoot tips, fruit clusters, and berries) molecular and ampelography data will enable the identification of the poorly characterized, but genetically rich grapevine resources from Armenia. The twenty SSR-markers adopted by the European Union Project GrapeGen06 will be used for (genotype-specific profile) identification purposes. The success of this widely used analytic methodology will be a major contributor to collection and continuance of current and future projects as well as assist the success of breeding programs and oenology. This project will greatly contribute to the Vitis germplasm in Armenia, preserving it from further erosion.
